If you’re going to be a writer, you’re going to need something to write about. When you need something to write about, you need ideas.

Ideas are the bread and butter of writing. They’re necessary if you’re going to keep the flow going.

I came across this idea from James Altucher to come up with 10 ideas every single day, about anything. I came across it a second time from Khadejah to write 10 headline ideas a day. The whole idea is to simply train your idea muscle and get used to coming up with things.

I started writing 10 headlines every day. I have a note on my phone that I add to every day, and without fail, I get 10 ideas by the end of the day. It’s not always easy and sometimes I struggle to add to it, but I always get my ten.

I’ve been doing this for about a month now and I’m pretty happy with my results. Some of my ideas are really stupid. Like 5 reasons cats are better than dogs. But some of them are pretty solid. I’ll take an idea from my phone and write on that topic for my morning writing.

So how do I come up with at least ten ideas a day?

Stop chasing the unicorn. You’re going to have some shitty ideas. You’re going to come up with tons of stupid ideas. It doesn’t matter. You have to stop chasing this holy grail idea that you’re waiting to come up with. Spoiler alert: it’s not going to come to you. You have to go after it.

Accept there are no new ideas. Simply new reiterations. There is nothing on earth that hasn’t already been said. The key is that it hasn’t been said by you yet. You’ll come up with your own take on something and it will be great.

The best articles have strong viewpoints or are helpful topics. Some questions to ask yourself are:

What are you against?

What are you for?

What do you wish people knew?

What are you afraid of?

You can google prompts and use them as a jumping-off point. The idea is to get over yourself and start writing. You can do it.

A magical idea is not going to be bestowed upon you. You have to stop waiting to find inspiration and go and get it yourself. Stop thinking that you’re going to reinvent the entire wheel and turn the wheel upside down.

You’re going to have the same damn wheel no matter how you spin it. The magic is in your spin. Go forth and generate ideas. Have fun.
