Why You Need to Shut Up About Quality vs. Quantity and Just Write
“Should I focus on quality or quantity?” The newbie writer asks. “I’m just going to post once a week so I can focus on quality.”
And then, they never post again.
There’s a big debate on whether writers should focus on quality or quantity.
On the quality side, people say they want to put out their best quality work. They want their material to be reflective of their work style and worthy of their talents.
If you focus on quality, then your articles will be a representation of who you are as a writer. It will show that you take yourself seriously.
The quantity camp says you should put out more content rather than focusing on quality. The problem here is if it impedes the quality of your work and you put out bad work.
If you focus on quantity, your quality will suffer. You just want to wait to make sure your article is pristine and in good condition, but if you write for quantity you sacrifice that.
The thing is when you first start, all your work is going to be crummy. You’re not going to start writing and magically churn out perfect pieces. No, they’re going to be crappy.
Sometimes people use ‘quality’ as a stall tactic to delay their work. You say you’re still working on it, that it just needs final touches. Stop. You’re putting it off.
You’re using ‘quality’ as an excuse to not post. Get over yourself.
If you post more content, you’re getting more experience. You’re practicing your craft more and learning in real-time.
You can still be intentional about your work. As you progress forward, look back on what’s working and what isn’t. You should be able to analyze your work and your craft.
In the end, it all comes down to writing.
You’re never going to get quality content if you don’t practice. Everyone starts off as a bad writer. It’s only with time and experience that you get better.
