The Last Season of “Sabrina, The Teenage Witch” Was Pointless
Seriously, why would she go and marry some random guy?
Sabrina, the Teenage Witch ran from 1996 to 2003 following our heroine, Sabrina, as she navigated her new life in the magical world. The show ran for seven glorious seasons.
However, as much as I love Sabrina, the last season never should have existed.
Season 7 of Sabrina revolves around Sabrina meeting and falling in love with this guy named Aaron.
The whole storyline negates what we learned the previous season.
In the last episode of Season 6, Aunt Hilda falls in love and quickly gets engaged to be married.
Aunt Zelda and Sabrina think she’s going too fast and conspire to break up the engagement.
Their efforts succeed. Crushed, Aunt Hilda turns to stone and falls to pieces.
According to Aunt Zelda, there was an important reason for this.
“The only time a witch falls to pieces is when she’s separated from her soul mate.” — Aunt Zelda (Season 6, Episode 22: I Fall to Pieces)
The keyword they use here is ‘soulmate.’
Aunt Hilda and her beau are reunited and they get married.
Now, let’s talk about why this is important.
In order to put Aunt Hilda back together, Sabrina must sacrifice her own true love.
At the end of the episode, Sabrina is approached by three separate men, all proclaiming their love for her. Each one immediately follows up with an excuse as to why they were leaving her.
One was a random guy at the wedding, another was Josh, her college boyfriend, and the other was Harvey, her high school sweetheart.
Sabrina gets her comeuppance as she has lost her true love.
After all three men leave, we watch a heartbroken Sabrina turn to stone, promptly falling to pieces.
We know from Hilda that means she’s been separated from her soul mate.
Now, obviously, the random Joe wasn’t her soulmate, leaving either Josh or Harvey.
Season 7 starts off with a completely different new guy that Sabrina falls in love with.
Eventually, they get engaged to be married. EXCEPT we know from the previous season either Josh or Harvey was her soulmate.
In the series finale, it’s revealed that Harvey has been Sabrina’s soulmate all along. WHO KNEW? Not me.
Which begs the question, why on God’s green earth did the last season revolve around someone we knew she wouldn’t marry?
Obviously, the real answer is because the network was riding on the high of the show’s views. They wanted to capitalize on their product.
But this is a dissatisfying answer. This does such a disservice to their fans.
Too often, creators get carried away with their success and end up ruining it by taking it too far. It destroys the integrity of the show and leaves a foul taste in the mouth.
For Sabrina, we got a half-baked last season that added nothing to the show. If anything, it detracted from it.
Sabrina, the Teenage Witch still remains a childhood favorite.
I simply wish creators stayed true to their art, rather than conforming to success.
