Music is one of my greatest joys in life. Therefore, I listen to a lot of music. Through all the music I’ve listened to, I’ve come across good singers and bad singers. Amazing lyricists and poor lyricists.

One thing I’ve noticed is there are some artists who get way more praise than they deserve. Others who don’t get nearly enough praise.

There are many pop artists who are just okay but are considered royalty among media. Here are some of note.

Billie Eilish

What separates Billie Eilish from her peers is that she has a famous brother. Otherwise, her music is pretty run-of-the-mill standard. Frankly, I’m not even sure it should be considered music considering she mostly talk sings most of her songs.

Justin Bieber

Even when Justin Bieber was younger and becoming a hit, he never impressed me. He has a whiny voice and his vocals aren’t impressive at all. He fulfilled the dream lives for young girls' fantasies, and that’s the real reason his singing career took off.

Selena Gomez

Selena has what I like to call “karaoke voice.” It’s that voice we all hit where we’re enjoying ourselves and having fun. Everyone has it. It doesn’t mean you have a good voice or should be a singer. But Selena is charming as hell, so people fall for it.

Adam Levine

Maroon 5 songs are fun to sing to, but if we’re going on singing technique, style, and range, Adam is severely lacking. He has a unique voice, sure, but it doesn’t change the fact that his voice is mediocre at best.

Ed Sheeran

He has a few hit songs, I’ll give him that. As far as vocals go, he’s an amateur. Just because you can write good music does not make you a good singer. Same with Taylor Swift. Just because you have skills in one area does not mean they will transfer over.

Taylor Swift

Speaking of Taylor Swift. Her songs are bangin’ and tell a great story, but as far as vocals go, Taylor is lacking. She also falls victim to “karaoke voice.” She doesn’t actually have a good voice, but we’ve been fooled into thinking so because her music is so popular.

Beyoncé

I do not get the obsession with Beyoncé. She’s regaled as a queen and put up on this pedestal, but her music isn’t that great and I don’t see whatever it is that makes her a ‘queen.’ Somehow, she’s gained this huge popularity and following, but I’m not impressed.

This is not to say these artists don’t have talent or good music. I just don’t understand their popularity for their talent levels.

Music is one of those things that’s subjective, so everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Just because I think they’re overrated, you might not.

Don’t confuse a catchy hit with talent. They’re not the same thing. And one thing is for sure. Just because you can sing does not make you a singer.

Don’t quit your day job, kids.
