Inspiration is an elusive minx. Just when you thought you found her, she goes running off into the sunset leaving you blindsided.

You thought that if you found inspiration, then you could finally create your masterpiece. If you had the inspiration, you would find the heart in your piece and it would become whole.

The truth is inspiration doesn’t work like that. It’s not a magical gift that will be bestowed upon you; it’s not something that’s going to fall into your lap.

More often than not, you have to go chasing after inspiration. It’s impossible to track her down, and even more impossible to cage her, but you try anyway.

When you can’t find inspiration, you have to go looking for it. There are a few ways to do this.

The first is to try something new. This can be anything. Go out and meet someone new, take a class on something you’ve never tried before, pick up a random hobby, or go write somewhere completely different from where you normally write.

It’s amazing what you’ll find when you try something new.

The other option is to mine your subconscious. The best way to do this is to brain dump. Every. Single. Day. This could look like morning pages, where you write three pages in the morning without stopping. Or you might try a stream of consciousness and see where it goes.

Sometimes inspiration is just about getting pen to paper and seeing what comes.

Interesting things tend to come up when you let your mind loose to play. You might not always like what you dig up, but you’ll certainly dig something up, even if it’s not gold.

In the end, you can’t rely on inspiration and motivation. You have to go after it yourself. Keep trying and keep digging because eventually, you will find the gold.
