Do Things Just For the Hell of It

What if we just did things for the hell of it? Rather than always needing a reason or purpose to do things.

I’ve never been one to do things just for the hell of it, or just for fun. Even ‘just for fun’ has a purpose — to have fun.

But I’ve been thinking about it.

What if we just did things for the hell of it? Rather than always needing a reason or purpose to do things.

I started this writing challenge mostly on a whim. I said to myself, “Well, it can’t be that hard. Why the hell not?” After all, I’ve always loved writing.

Purpose is a strange thing. I feel like I need a purpose for doing or for being. If I’m going to write, then what am I going to write about? Why am I writing?

Until one day, it struck me. What if things didn’t need to have a purpose?

What if — and just go along with it — having a purpose wasn’t necessary?

To be clear, I do think having a purpose for our being is important. To have a purpose that drives you forward in life is important. But you don’t have to do things for the sole purpose of something if that makes any sense.

What if the purpose was no purpose? What if — and bear with me — the only purpose was that it didn’t have a purpose?

Like the only rule is that there are no rules.

How liberating is that? It gives you free rein to do and be whatever you want.

Sometimes it just takes changing your attitude. Instead of constantly asking, “Why?” ask, “Why not?” And if you’re feeling really adventurous, “Why the hell not?”

It is liberating. It’s freeing to think you don’t have to live by some constraint or a reason.

Granted, I think reasons are important. There is a limit by which to live with no reason or purpose.

I still think we need purpose in our lives, but you can do things in life for no other reason than to just have fun.
