3 Signs You Should Give Up Your Writing Career
Writing isn’t for everyone.
So, you’ve been writing for a while now. Maybe you’re up to a few weeks or months, maybe even years. You’re making progress, but it doesn’t feel like it’s enough. You’re not happy with your progress and work is dragging you down. You’re considering — is this the right path for you?
Here are three signs you’re going down the wrong path.
1. You’re only in it for the money
Writing for money is basically a zero-sum game. It takes years of practice before you can see any real tangible results. Writing is not one of those things you can do unless you love it.
Writing is a labor of love and it takes a real, emotional tax out on you. Even the best writers struggle with it sometimes. If you think this is the avenue to make money, you’re wrong, and it’s time to switch careers.
2. You don’t like doing it.
If you don’t like doing something, then why should you spend any time on it? Life is short and you don’t have as much time as you think you do. Don’t waste it doing things that don’t spark a fire in you.
3. You feel pressured into writing or writing for a specific niche.
This ties into the above point that you don’t like it. If you aren’t into what you’re writing, you’re never going to make any real moves. You have to be in it for the right reasons.
If for some reason you feel pressured to be into writing, here is your permission slip. You don’t have to write. Go and spend your free time doing something else you enjoy more.
Writing isn’t for everyone, at least not as a career. You can’t make yourself fall in love with something that you’re not interested in or you’re not interested in investing your time and energy in.
You have to write because you love to write. This is not a career for the weak at heart. Love what you do or find something else that does it for you.
