The One Thing You Need To Do to Come Up With Ideas Quick

For the past three months, I’ve been coming up with a minimum of 10 headline ideas every day, without fail.

At first, it seemed impossible. How can I come up with that many ideas on a regular basis? It took some digging, but I quickly found the answer. Since then, I’ve been on an idea roll.

So, what’s the secret? How do you do it?

You consume.

The answer is going to be the same for any discipline. If you’re blocked or can’t come up with anything, you have to consume.

For writers, we have to read, and sometimes watch TV too. Inspiration is everywhere once you go looking for it.

Whenever I’m stuck and can’t come up with any ideas, I read. In fact, Medium has become my go-to in all of my down moments.

I’ll pick up my phone and start reading an article and before I know it, I’ll be zinging off ideas.

Normally, when you can’t come up with something, it’s because you haven’t consumed enough of it yet to be able to come up with your own ideas. You need to consume in order to create.

Once you start consuming, you’ll notice your brain is more amped up. Use this for idea generation.

There are three ways to get ideas out of this:

  • The first is it will trigger an idea in your brain.

Often, when we do something we may accidentally trigger a memory from our past or jog out a random piece of information we once learned.

  • The second is you can use it as a response piece.

Humans are at no shortage of opinions, and chances are you have an opinion on what you read. Use that as an article. You can agree or disagree. Elaborate on why and add your own thoughts to it.

  • The last way to dig out an idea is to summarize.

This doesn’t require as much work as the other two. All it takes is boiling down the article and, essentially, putting your own spin on it. At the end of your article, link to the original piece.

There are so many ways to come up with ideas, and so many ideas waiting to come to fruition. If you’re stuck, simply pick up a book, watch some television, or read some on Medium. In case all else fails, try this one on for size.
