4 Tips to Inspire You and Maximize Your Writing Output
How to be prolific in your writing
Everyone wants to have content under their belt. It’s the only way to make a name for yourself. Good writing requires a lot of writing. A lot of writing comes over hours of work, working hundreds of individual sessions.Every session matters. It matters that you’re showing up to work, and wouldn’t it be nice if every session were productive? Not every session is going to be productive or perfect, but you can certainly try and maximize your efficiency. There are a few ways you can increase your output. Each writing session can be made more impactful by implementing different techniques. By implementing these techniques, you should be able to increase your output and have more quality work.
Write uninterrupted.
Every morning, I close my door and turn off my phone before I start writing. I set a timer for twenty minutes and dive in.You have to remove distractions to maximize your output. When you get distracted, you interrupt the flow of ideas and writing. You may forget what you were doing or lose your place. You don’t want to be interrupted.Remove as many possible distractions as you can. Put your phone away. Write somewhere you won’t be disturbed, even if it’s the bathroom.
Save time and edit later.
Amateur writers make the mistake of editing while they write. They stop to fix their grammar mistakes or typos, slowing down their flow. They stop to look up a fact or quote and end up sidetracked and stop writing together.Do yourself a favor and put a placeholder there. Use whatever works for you. On Medium, you can use the initials ‘TK’ to remind yourself that you want to add something. If you’re not on Medium, you can use any kind of placeholder that works for you.I stick to parentheses and write whatever I need to do. For instance, (write an example here).
Keep a library of all your ideas.
I have a note on my phone where I keep all of my ideas, and I add to it every day. Keep a log of all your ideas, whether you use your phone or pen and paper.Your library will give you an expansive list of ideas to turn to whenever you’re stuck or need help writing. This leads me to my final point.
Write with a focused prompt or question in mind.
You can free write or use a stream of consciousness, but that will be harder to dig through. If you have an idea put it at the top of your draft and use it to guide your writing session. If you feel like getting crazy, take a few minutes to jot out an outline or mind map. Use that to help your writing flow and put your words together. It makes a difference when you have something to write about rather than ping-ponging ideas off the wall.
Final thoughts
This is how to be prolific with your content and maximize the work you do in your sessions. In summary, you want to write uninterrupted, keep a backlog of ideas at the ready, save your edits for post-session or the next session altogether, and write with a focused topic in mind. This will keep your writing top-notch. Maybe not top-notch, but it will help you to stay on track and get your writing in good shape.
