You’ve just picked up this new skill or hobby and you’re excited. You’re ready to learn and do the thing. You give it a shot and it sucks. You’re disappointed. For some reason, there’s this narrative perpetuated that you should be good at things when you first pick them up, and you can’t make mistakes. If you want to get better at anything, practice is necessary. Somewhere along the lines, we got it in our head that we had to be good at something right away rather than knowing that ‘good’ comes from putting in the work and training.Nobody is going to be great at anything right off the bat. That’s normal. That’s how it should be.There is not a person on earth that has become a master without putting in years of work. You don’t have to put in 10,000 hours of work, but if you want to improve it’s going to require work. There’s always room for improvement. That’s what learning is. Learning is making mistakes and figuring out how to not make them next time. Learning is practicing your craft over and over until you form competency. If you don’t practice, you’re setting yourself up to fail. All of the greats had to practice to get where they are. They spent hundreds of hours practicing and perfecting their craft. That’s the only way to get better.
