You keep checking your stats and they’re nowhere near where you want them to be.

Looking at them makes you feel disappointed. You thought you would be farther along by now. If only you had worked harder, then maybe you would be further along.

I have a secret for you: it’s not about working harder, it’s about working smarter.

I’ve learned a thing or two in my first few months of writing. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this.

You have to get as specific as possible in what you’re trying to achieve.

Most people when setting goals are too vague and don’t have a clear objective. This is why you should use SMART goals.

Are they Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relative, and Timely?

If not, consider revamping your goal.

For instance, many people at the start of the year resolve to get more fit. They get pumped up, saying “I want to get fit this year!” “I’m going to be in the best shape of my life.” Then, when they’re unsuccessful, they wonder where they went wrong.

They were too vague. It’s not enough to say you want to get fit.

Instead of saying something like, “I want to run more,” adjust it to be more specific and standard to SMART goals. Try, I’m going to run on the treadmill three times a week.

It’s specific. It gives you a tangible goal. It’s measurable. You know whether or not you can do it. It’s achievable — you don’t want to get too over the top.

Keep the goal to something small. It’s relative to the goal of being healthy, and it’s timely. It’s actionable right now.

So, if you’re trying to beef up your results, try narrowing down what you’re trying to accomplish. Instead of using vague goal posts, nail down and get specific about what you’re trying to achieve.

For writers, their goal might be to write more or to get more views. Again, these fall short of specific. If it’s not something you could take an action on right now, try and drill down further.

What exactly needs to be done? How often do you want to write? How much? Do you need to improve your headlines? Do you need to get better at SEO? Do you need to market in new places? Will any of this require research?

Start there. It’s totally possible to make a change, so long as you are specific in your goals.
