If You Have to Call Yourself an Influencer, Then Chances Are You Aren’t
With the rise of the digital age, so has the rise of digital jobs. Nobody could have expected this was where we would be twenty years ago, and yet here we are.Now we live in a world where people make money by living. Youtubers blog their daily lives and get billions of views. TikTok will show you anything and everything, and kids are making millions off it.‘Influencer’ is now an acceptable job title. When you ask kids what they want to be, it’s perfectly normal for them to say, “Influencer.”
‘Influencer’ is a term we use to convey an individual’s reach. If you are an influencer, you have sway over your chosen niche.People who call themselves influencers are fake. They have thousands of followers, but that doesn’t mean they enact change.If you look at people who are enacting change, they rarely call themselves influencers. They don’t pander.People who have influence don’t go around calling themselves influencers. They’re doing their part and influencing people by example.Consider people like Jameela Jamil, Emma Watson, or Greta Thunberg. None of these people identify as influencers, yet they have made an impact on the world.Real influencers don’t call themselves influencers because they are too busy working.Saying you want to be an influencer is like saying you want to be a celebrity. Except you don’t do anything of note to get there. You amass followers with beautiful pictures and hook them. Influencers aren’t making a positive influence on the world. They have the power to make people buy things.Being an influencer is all about marketing and making money. A real influencer cares about change and does the work.Anybody who calls themselves an influencer is a salesperson. They want your money.The real influencers enact change through inspiration.Don’t be an influencer. Actions speak far greater than words. If you want to have influence, lead by example.
