How One Doctor Saved Me From Living in a Mental Hospital
There I was, sitting in outpatient therapy, ready to meet yet another doctor.I had already been through the wringer when I was in the mental hospital. Doctors passed me off from one to another. Changing my diagnosis, changing the drugs I was taking.When I finally got out, I was sick of doctors.I sat down across from my new doctor, frustrated. She was visiting from a different hospital and filling in temporarily. Dr. Roberson.I was ready to hear more crap about my health, but then she surprised me.She looked in my file and saw that I had been asking about ECT — electroconvulsive therapy. She opened our discussion by talking about that.She said I was an excellent candidate. And just my luck — the hospital where she worked had an ECT program.She put me in touch with the director so I could set up a meeting.Before I knew it, I was admitted to the program and being treated for my depression with ECT.
ECT turned out to be what I needed. It untangled the wires in my brain and gave me a reset.All because one doctor took a chance on me. One doctor tossed me a lifeline. One doctor was all it took.She set me on the right course of treatment and changed my life.It’s been over a year and my life has changed drastically.I finally feel free. I don’t feel like my mental health controls me. I feel more in control than ever.It took hitting rock bottom to get there. It took countless doctors. It took lots of different drugs.It took time. But all it takes is one person to change your life forever. Once you find them, you have a second chance at life.Life is worth fighting for.You won’t be stuck here forever.
