How to Keep Going in the Face of Adversity

Everything seems to be going wrong.

Every time you think you’re safe, something else comes along and knocks you right off the path.

You keep waiting on the other shoe to drop because all it does is keep dropping.

Things are bad. You didn’t think they could get any worse. Then they do. It’s like life is testing you. Waiting to see how much you can take.

It’s taking one hit after another. It’s tiring and you feel like giving up. All you want is for it to stop. You would do anything to make it stop.

I went through a particularly rough patch when I felt the same way. I was battling Major Depression. I dropped out of school temporarily. My dad was sick with cancer. My aunt died from cancer, and my dad followed six months after.

Everything you thought could go wrong went wrong. And then some. It felt like the world was dangling me over the pits of Tartarus, getting ever closer to dropping me in.

I was broken and I wasn’t sure I would ever recover.

But there was one thing that kept me going.

You’ve already gotten through all the worst parts of your life.

The fact that I was still standing was a testament to human strength. The human strength to survive.

Humans have this unnatural ability to get through the worst of circumstances. Despite centuries of everything tumbling down around them, humans continue to beat the odds.

I held onto that as strong as possible. I had already gotten through the worst in my life.

If I had gotten through the worst so far, who is to say I couldn’t handle the next battle? If I could make it through until now, then I can make it through the next thing.

I drew strength from myself, and you can too.

As bleak as everything may seem, the one thing you can count on is change. Change is inevitable.

It means that things will never stay the same. It means nothing can last forever. It means your circumstances can’t stay that way.

Things may get worse, but worse is relative. You’ve already gone through the worst of it, and you survived. Because in truth, you’re a survivor. No, not a survivor — a fighter. You can make it through anything.

Life is ever-changing. Things will get worse and they will get better. That’s why it’s important to take every passing moment as a grain of salt. Revel in the fact that it will get better, even if it sucks now.

You’re a warrior and every minute that passes only proves that. You can handle anything life throws at you.

You may not think so, but take a look at the evidence. You’re still breathing. You’re still alive. The fact that you’re still alive makes you strong.

With everything in this life crashing down and coming to an end, it’s incredible that you’re alive.

You’re incredible. Live.
