Saying ‘I Don’t Know’ is Perfectly Acceptable
Learn how to say it proudly.
One of my favorite phrases in the world is ‘I don’t know.’ It’s my fallback whenever I don’t have a good answer to something or I’m just at a loss for words.Ugh. I don’t know. When I try to write and can’t come up with something, it’s ‘I don’t know.’ When someone asks me a question I don’t know the answer to, I BS and tell them ‘I don’t know.’There seems to be this idea in society that we have to have it all together and always know the answer. It’s a weakness to admit that you don’t know. You should know. Why don’t you?I think we’re taking the wrong approach to this.I don’t know. These three words are perfectly acceptable. It’s okay if you don’t know the answers. I actually see it as a strength.Instead of pretending to know everything, you’re admitting that you don’t. You have the humility to be wrong.Nobody ever wants to be wrong, so they pretend they’ve got it all together. They pretend they have the answers and like their life is perfect.I have a secret for you: it’s not. It’s all make-believe.Being able to admit you don’t know is a strength. It says you’re willing to learn and you’re willing to let someone else have the upper hand, which is also totally okay.We all compare ourselves, thinking life is some kind of game we have to win.Truth is, life is random. It’s not a game. It just is. It’s this marvelous thing that nobody has answers for, despite millennia of trying to.There aren’t answers to everything. There isn’t always going to be an answer. Certainly not one right answer. Get comfortable with not knowing. Get comfortable saying, ‘I don’t know.’I don’t have the answers, but I’m guessing you don’t either. And that’s okay.
