The Only Way to Accomplish Your Goals is to Start Small

The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

— Lao Tzu

I used to think I could change my life overnight. I would get gung ho and plan out all the ways I was going to change my life. Exercise every day. Eat salads more often. Set aside work hours. Read this much. Play this much music.I was wrong. I thought I could change my life in one go, but in reality, most of the time, change is small.Progress is infinite little steps adding up over time. That’s why it’s important to chunk away small bits at a time. You can’t overhaul your life in one go. It’s why people talk so highly about habits. You don’t make major progress in a weekend. Often, you don’t even see the progress. It’s easy to get discouraged when you can’t see the progress. All you want is to speed the process up and get results, but those kinds of results aren’t long-lasting. If you want lasting results, you have to be patient. It takes the hard work of showing up day in and day out. One step at a time. Then, it all starts to build up.Compound interest is amazing. To see how small steps every day add up over time and before you know it, you’ve climbed a whole mountain. You can look behind you and see the trail you left behind in the distance. Now you stand at the precipice of who you are and who you once were. Look at all that progress you made.Every day, you have another opportunity to make progress. You have the opportunity to change your life every day. It just happens in small ways.It just takes putting one foot in front of the other, step by step. Keep going and you will get there.
