The Life You Were Supposed to Have

The cool breeze floats in from the open door on your balcony. You sigh into your pillow.

As you roll out of my head, you walk over toward my balcony and take in the view. The lake shimmers in the distance and the mountains look like giants behind it.

Your partner has cooked breakfast again and it’s glorious. You sit down together and eat, allowing silence to pass between the two of you.

Your days are relaxed and peaceful. You spend time doing everything you love with the people you love most.

Throughout life, we imagine our future and make plans for how we hope it will turn out. We picture the giant house and our family. The vacations and getaways.

In reality, our dreams almost never pan out the way we expect.

Life doesn’t always happen the way you expect. Sometimes, too often, it likes to throw you curveballs.

I had all these plans for how my life was going to turn out. Things I was supposed to do by now.

I was supposed to go to a four-year college and graduate with my friends. I was supposed to date, find a partner and move in together. I was supposed to do more.

All of these ‘supposed to’s’ for our futures.

We get caught up in what could have been and forget about what’s right in front of us.

Instead of living your life, you’re too caught up in ‘what-ifs?’ But, that doesn’t serve you.

It doesn’t serve you to wonder what life would have been like if you didn’t have depression. If your dad didn’t die. If you didn’t move from your childhood home.

You can contemplate these answers forever, and the truth is you’ll never know what could have been.

All that you can do is try and focus on the here and now.
