When you look at starting a new habit, it can be overwhelming. All of the sudden, you’re faced with weeks and months of building this new habit. It feels like you’re staring up a mountain. It’s daunting. You don’t need to be afraid of building habits.Habits don’t have to be overwhelming. Here’s how you can hack it.When you think about starting a new habit, you immediately start thinking of it in terms of your future. You think about the results you’ll get weeks or months down the line. You anticipate the hard work you have in front of you to implement it. You get overwhelmed. You think if you miss one day, then the whole effort has been a wash.Take a step back and stop worrying about building a habit.Stop thinking about habits long-term and think about them short-term instead.Rather than focusing on the fact you have to exercise every day for months to come, focus on one day at a time.Don’t look at the future. Stay in the present. When you do this, the pressure for maintaining a habit lifts and it feels more like an intentional choice you choose to make every day.Every day, you get to choose whether it’s something you want to continue. When you look at one day at a time, you can breathe easier. It’s a simple decision. Do I choose to eat a salad today? Do I choose to go for a walk today? Do I choose to write today? At any point, you have the freedom and power to skip a day, without ruining the dreaded streak. You make the decision. You have the power.
