The Sunlight Protection Act is Going to Screw Us All Over
Of all the things our governors choose to be busy with, this is it.
I woke up at 7 this morning. Wait no — scratch that. 6 o’clock. All because of this ruddy time change. To my pleasure and surprise, I was glad to hear that we’re going to get rid of all this nonsense with the spring forward and fall back.Imagine my displeasure when I found out they wanted to standardize Daylight Savings Time and not get rid of it.To be clear, I agree. We shouldn’t keep changing the time every six months. It’s disruptive and screws with systems everywhere. We should not be keeping Daylight Savings Time though. We should be getting rid of it.The problem with this is that it screws with people’s natural circadian rhythm. As I’m writing this, it’s 9 am and the sun is still working its’ way out.We might as well screw it up altogether and sleep all day long, party all night long.Screw the sun and the moon — they can’t tell our bodies what to do. Darkness means party. Brightness means sleep. This totally makes sense. What people forget is that days are naturally shorter in the wintertime and get longer in the summer.Days naturally adjust to the sun as the Earth moves around the Solar System. We would get more sunshine in the summer because we’re closer to the sun then. But no. Standardize the time that will make 9 o'clock freaking o’ dark thirty in the winter.Do you think it’s dangerous driving at night when it’s dark and you’re tired?Imagine getting up at 7 am to go to your job and the sun still hasn’t come out. It’s hard to feel like it’s time to get up and go to work when the sun still hasn’t come out.And sure, plenty of work has changed. We’re not exactly living in normal work times. The point still stands. Daylight Savings is a useless concept that has gone out of style. If we’re going to standardize a time, it should not be this. There should be no Daylight Savings Time.
