June 21: Create your own prompt

When I was 13, the temptress named Depression lulled me into her grasp. I fell fast and hard.

As if puberty wasn’t enough, now I had to contend with a whole new slew of emotional hell. I was listless. I would go to school and let the days pass me by without notice.

But someone did notice. My mom.

My mom noticed this change in personality and decided to do something. She told me to pack my bags and took me out of school for a few days. We were going to Disney World.

My childhood heart perked up at that. Disney World is a magical place. Every time we went it was magical and bliss. I never turned down the opportunity to go to Disney World.

We rode our favorite rollercoasters — Thunder Mountain, Space Mountain, and our newly minted favorite, Expedition Everest.

As it turned out, all of this was a distraction from the real reason we were there.

The day we were getting ready to head back, my mom surprised me. She said we were going to get a kitten. She got a newspaper and looked for local ads for kittens.

We found a vet tech who had a litter of seal-point ragdoll kittens.

The entire time I was there, I was enamored by all the kittens. Apparently, the promise of a kitten could warm my cold heart. We were there for a few hours until we hashed out all the details and walked away with our new, little kitten.

I fell in love. She slept on my lap the entire ride home. I managed to stay incredibly chill despite the fleas falling off of her. I was too distracted to really care.

She became my best friend. She supported me through something that I had a hard time handling on my own. She was a light in the darkness and the magic I needed.

Key Message: Animals can provide excellent emotional support. My cat is my ESA.
